عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ١

(The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away,

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

(The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ ٢

Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs).

أَن جَاءَهُ

Because there came to him

الْأَعْمَىٰ

the blind man

(i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him)

while he was preaching

to one or some of the Quraish chiefs

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ ٣

But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)?

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ

But what could tell you

لَعَلَّهُ

that per chance he

يَزَّكَّىٰ

might become pure (from sins)

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ ٤

Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him?

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ

Or that he might receive admonition

فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

and that the admonition might profit him

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ ٥

As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient,

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦

To him you attend;

فَأَنتَ لَهُ

To him you

تَصَدَّىٰ

attend;

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧

What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah).

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ

What does it matter to you

أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

if he will not become pure (from disbelief)

you are only a Messenger

your duty is

to convey the Message

of Allah

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ٨

But as to him who came to you running.

وَأَمَّا مَن

But as to him who

جَاءَكَ

came to you

يَسْعَىٰ

running

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ٩

And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment),

وَهُوَ

And is

يَخْشَىٰ

afraid (of Allah and His Punishment)

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠

Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another,

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ

Of him you are neglectful

تَلَهَّىٰ

and divert your attention to another
