۞ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ خَرَجُوا مِن دِيَارِهِمْ وَهُمْ أُلُوفٌ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ اللَّهُ مُوتُوا ثُمَّ أَحْيَاهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ ٢٤٣

Did you (O Muhammad SAW) not think of those who went forth from their homes in thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, "Die". And then He restored them to life. Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most men thank not.

۞ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ خَرَجُوا مِن دِيَارِهِمْ

Did you (O Muhammad SAW) not think of those who went forth from their homes

وَهُمْ أُلُوفٌ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ

in thousands, fearing death?

فَقَالَ لَهُمُ اللَّهُ مُوتُوا

Allah said to them, 'Die'.

ثُمَّ أَحْيَاهُمْ ۚ

And then He restored them to life.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ

Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind,

وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ

but most men thank not.

وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٢٤٤

And fight in the Way of Allah and know that Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

And fight in the Way of Allah

وَاعْلَمُوا

and know that

أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower

مَّن ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ٢٤٥

Who is he that will lend to Allah a goodly loan so that He may multiply it to him many times? And it is Allah that decreases or increases (your provisions), and unto Him you shall return.

مَّن ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا

Who is he that will lend to Allah a goodly loan

فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً ۚ

so that He may multiply it to him many times?

وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ

And it is Allah that decreases or increases (your provisions),

وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

and unto Him you shall return.

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ مِن بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِن بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَّهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۖ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَاتِلُوا ۖ قَالُوا وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نُقَاتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَارِنَا وَأَبْنَائِنَا ۖ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ ٢٤٦

Have you not thought about the group of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Musa (Moses)? When they said to a Prophet of theirs, "Appoint for us a king and we will fight in Allah's Way." He said, "Would you then refrain from fighting, if fighting was prescribed for you?" They said, "Why should we not fight in Allah's Way while we have been driven out of our homes and our children (families have been taken as captives)?" But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned away, all except a few of them. And Allah is All-Aware of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ مِن بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِن بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ

Have you not thought about the group of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Musa (Moses)?

إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَّهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا

When they said to a Prophet of theirs, 'Appoint for us a king'

نُّقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۖ

and we will fight in Allah's Way.

قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَاتِلُوا ۖ

He said, 'Would you then refrain from fighting, if fighting was prescribed for you?'

قَالُوا وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نُقَاتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

They said, 'Why should we not fight in Allah's Way

وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَارِنَا وَأَبْنَائِنَا ۖ

while we have been driven out of our homes and our children (families have been taken as captives)?'

فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ

But when fighting was ordered for them,

تَوَلَّوْا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۗ

they turned away, all except a few of them.

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ

And Allah is All-Aware of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا ۚ قَالُوا أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يُؤْتَ سَعَةً مِّنَ الْمَالِ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَزَادَهُ بَسْطَةً فِي الْعِلْمِ وَالْجِسْمِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يُؤْتِي مُلْكَهُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٢٤٧

And their Prophet (Samuel) said to them, "Indeed Allah has appointed Talut (Saul) as a king over you." They said, "How can he be a king over us when we are better fitted than him for the kingdom, and he has not been given enough wealth." He said: "Verily, Allah has chosen him above you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah grants His Kingdom to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower."

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ

And their Prophet (Samuel) said to them,

إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا ۚ

Indeed Allah has appointed Talut (Saul) as a king over you.

قَالُوا أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ عَلَيْنَا

They said, 'How can he be a king over us

وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ

when we are better fitted than him for the kingdom,

وَلَمْ يُؤْتَ سَعَةً مِّنَ الْمَالِ ۚ

and he has not been given enough wealth.'

قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ

He said: 'Verily, Allah has chosen him above you

وَزَادَهُ بَسْطَةً فِي الْعِلْمِ وَالْجِسْمِ ۖ

and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature.

وَاللَّهُ يُؤْتِي مُلْكَهُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ

And Allah grants His Kingdom to whom He wills.

وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower.

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ آيَةَ مُلْكِهِ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ التَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ آلُ مُوسَىٰ وَآلُ هَارُونَ تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ٢٤٨

And their Prophet (Samuel) said to them: Verily! The sign of His Kingdom is that there shall come to you At-Tabut (a wooden box), wherein is Sakinah (peace and reassurance) from your Lord and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind, carried by the angels. Verily, in this is a sign for you if you are indeed believers.

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ

And their Prophet (Samuel) said to them:

إِنَّ آيَةَ مُلْكِهِ

Verily! The sign of His Kingdom is that

أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ التَّابُوتُ

there shall come to you At-Tabut (a wooden box),

فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ

wherein is Sakinah (peace and reassurance) from your Lord

وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ آلُ مُوسَىٰ وَآلُ هَارُونَ

and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind,

تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ۚ

carried by the angels.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لَّكُمْ

Verily, in this is a sign for you

إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

if you are indeed believers.

فَلَمَّا فَصَلَ طَالُوتُ بِالْجُنُودِ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَمَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي إِلَّا مَنِ اغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةً بِيَدِهِ ۚ فَشَرِبُوا مِنْهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۚ فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُ هُوَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ قَالُوا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِ ۚ قَالَ الَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَاقُو اللَّهِ كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ ٢٤٩

Then when Talut (Saul) set out with the army, he said: "Verily! Allah will try you by a river. So whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me, and whoever tastes it not, he is of me, except him who takes (thereof) in the hollow of his hand." Yet, they drank thereof, all, except a few of them. So when he had crossed it (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: "We have no power this day against Jalut (Goliath) and his hosts." But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said: "How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allah's Leave?" And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

فَلَمَّا فَصَلَ طَالُوتُ بِالْجُنُودِ

Then when Talut (Saul) set out with the army,

قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ

he said: 'Verily! Allah will try you by a river.

فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي

So whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me,

وَمَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي

and whoever tastes it not, he is of me,

إِلَّا مَنِ اغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةً بِيَدِهِ ۚ

فَشَرِبُوا مِنْهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۚ

فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُ هُوَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ

So when he had crossed it (the river), he and those who believed with him,

قَالُوا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِ ۚ

they said: 'We have no power this day against Jalut (Goliath) and his hosts.'

قَالَ الَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَاقُو اللَّهِ

But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said:

كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ

'How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allah's Leave?'

وَاللَّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ ٢٥٠

And when they advanced to meet Jalut (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: "Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience, and set firm our feet and make us victorious over the disbelieving people."

وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِ

And when they advanced to meet Jalut (Goliath) and his forces,

قَالُوا

they invoked:

رَبَّنَا

"Our Lord!

أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا

Pour forth on us patience

وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا

and make us victorious

وَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

over the disbelieving people.

فَهَزَمُوهُم بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَقَتَلَ دَاوُودُ جَالُوتَ وَآتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلَّمَهُ مِمَّا يَشَاءُ ۗ وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُم بِبَعْضٍ لَّفَسَدَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ ٢٥١

So they routed them by Allah's Leave and Dawud (David) killed Jalut (Goliath), and Allah gave him [Dawud (David)] the kingdom [after the death of Talut (Saul) and Samuel] and Al-Hikmah (Prophethood), and taught him of that which He willed. And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allah is full of Bounty to the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

فَهَزَمُوهُم بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

So they routed them by Allah's Leave

وَقَتَلَ دَاوُودُ جَالُوتَ

and Dawud (David) killed Jalut (Goliath)

وَآتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ

and Allah gave him [Dawud (David)] the kingdom [after the death of Talut (Saul) and Samuel] and Al-Hikmah (Prophethood)

وَعَلَّمَهُ مِمَّا يَشَاءُ ۗ

and taught him of that which He willed

وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُم بِبَعْضٍ

And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another

لَّفَسَدَتِ الْأَرْضُ

the earth would indeed be full of mischief

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ

But Allah is full of Bounty to the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)

تِلْكَ آيَاتُ اللَّهِ نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ ٢٥٢

These are the Verses of Allah, We recite them to you (O Muhammad SAW) in truth, and surely, you are one of the Messengers (of Allah).

تِلْكَ آيَاتُ اللَّهِ

These are the Verses of Allah

نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ

We recite them to you (O Muhammad SAW) in truth

وَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

and surely, you are one of the Messengers (of Allah)
