إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَكَاذِبُونَ ١

When the hypocrites come to you (O Muhammad SAW), they say: "We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah." Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed.

إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ

When the hypocrites come to you

قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ

they say: 'We bear witness'

إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ۗ

that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.

وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ

Allah knows

إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُ

that you are indeed His Messenger

وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ

and Allah bears witness

إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَكَاذِبُونَ

that the hypocrites are liars indeed.

اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ٢

They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. Verily, evil is what they used to do.

اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً

They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy)

فَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ

Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah

إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

Verily, evil is what they used to do

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ ٣

That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand not.

ذَٰلِكَ

That is

بِأَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا

because they believed

ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا

then disbelieved

فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ

therefore their hearts are sealed

فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

so they understand not

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ الْعَدُوُّ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ ٤

And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path.

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ

And when you look at them,

تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ

their bodies please you;

وَإِن يَقُولُوا

and when they speak,

تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ

you listen to their words.

كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ

They are as blocks of wood propped up.

يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

They think that every cry is against them.

هُمُ الْعَدُوُّ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ

They are the enemies, so beware of them.

قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ

May Allah curse them!

أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ ٥

And when it is said to them: "Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you", they turn aside their heads, and you would see them turning away their faces in pride.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ

And when it is said to them

تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you

لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ

they turn aside their heads

وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ

and you would see them turning away their faces

وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ

in pride

سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ ٦

It is equal to them whether you (Muhammad SAW) ask forgiveness or ask not forgiveness for them, Allah will never forgive them. Verily, Allah guides not the people who are the Fasiqin (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ

It is equal to them

أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ

whether you (Muhammad SAW) ask forgiveness for them

أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ

or ask not forgiveness for them

لَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ

Verily, Allah will not forgive them

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

Indeed, Allah does not guide the people who are the Fasiqin (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)
