وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ ١

By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ

By the heaven, and

the heaven, and

At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star)

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الطَّارِقُ ٢

And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ

And what will make you to know

مَا الطَّارِقُ

what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?

النَّجْمُ الثَّاقِبُ ٣

(It is) the star of piercing brightness;

النَّجْمُ

(It is) the star

الثَّاقِبُ

of piercing brightness

إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ ٤

There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels incharge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds, etc.)

إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ

There is no human being

لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ

but has a protector over him (or her)

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ ٥

So let man see from what he is created!

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ

So let man see

مِمَّ خُلِقَ

from what he is created

خُلِقَ مِن مَّاءٍ دَافِقٍ ٦

He is created from a water gushing forth.

خُلِقَ

He is created

مِن مَّاءٍ

from a water

دَافِقٍ

gushing forth

يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَائِبِ ٧

Proceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs,

يَخْرُجُ

Proceeding

مِن بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَائِبِ

from between the back-bone and the ribs

إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِ لَقَادِرٌ ٨

Verily, (Allah) is Able to bring him back (to life)!

إِنَّهُ

Verily,

عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِ

(Allah) is Able to bring him back

لَقَادِرٌ

(to life)!

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ ٩

The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth).

يَوْمَ

The Day when

تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ

all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth)

فَمَا لَهُ مِن قُوَّةٍ وَلَا نَاصِرٍ ١٠

Then will (man) have no power, nor any helper.

فَمَا لَهُ

Then will (man) have

مِن قُوَّةٍ

no power

وَلَا نَاصِرٍ

nor any helper
