حم ١

[46:1] Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].

تَنزِيلُ الْكِتَابِ مِنَ اللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ ٢

[46:2] The revelation of the Book (this Quran) is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

تَنزِيلُ الْكِتَابِ

The revelation of the Book

مِنَ اللَّهِ

is from Allah

مَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا عَمَّا أُنذِرُوا مُعْرِضُونَ ٣

[46:3] We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and for an appointed term. But those who disbelieve turn away from that whereof they are warned.

مَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا

We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them

إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ

except with truth, and for an appointed term.

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

But those who disbelieve

عَمَّا أُنذِرُوا

turn away from that whereof they are warned.

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقُوا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ أَمْ لَهُمْ شِرْكٌ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ ۖ ائْتُونِي بِكِتَابٍ مِّن قَبْلِ هَٰذَا أَوْ أَثَارَةٍ مِّنْ عِلْمٍ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ٤

[46:4] Say (O Muhammad SAW to these pagans): "Think! All that you invoke besides Allah show me! What have they created of the earth? Or have they a share in (the creation of) the heavens? Bring me a Book (revealed before this), or some trace of knowledge (in support of your claims), if you are truthful!"

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

Say (O Muhammad SAW to these pagans): 'Think! All that you invoke besides Allah

أَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقُوا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ

show me! What have they created of the earth?

أَمْ لَهُمْ شِرْكٌ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ ۖ

Or have they a share in (the creation of) the heavens?

ائْتُونِي بِكِتَابٍ مِّن قَبْلِ هَٰذَا

Bring me a Book (revealed before this),

أَوْ أَثَارَةٍ مِّنْ عِلْمٍ

or some trace of knowledge (in support of your claims),

إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ

if you are truthful!

وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن يَدْعُو مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَن لَّا يَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَهُمْ عَن دُعَائِهِمْ غَافِلُونَ ٥

[46:5] And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?

وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن يَدْعُو مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah,

مَن لَّا يَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection,

وَهُمْ عَن دُعَائِهِمْ غَافِلُونَ

and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?

وَمَنْ

[46:6] And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping.

وَإِذَا حُشِرَ النَّاسُ

And when mankind are gathered

كَانُوا لَهُمْ أَعْدَاءً

they (false deities) will become enemies for them

وَكَانُوا بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ كَافِرِينَ

and will deny their worshipping

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ هَٰذَا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ ٧

[46:7] And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them, the disbelievers say of the truth (this Quran), when it reaches them: "This is plain magic!"

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ

And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them

قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

the disbelievers say

لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ

of the truth (this Quran), when it reaches them

هَٰذَا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ

This is plain magic!

وَإِذَا

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ ۖ قُلْ إِنِ افْتَرَيْتُهُ فَلَا تَمْلِكُونَ لِي مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ ۖ كَفَىٰ بِهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ ٨

[46:8] Or say they: "He (Muhammad SAW) has fabricated it." Say: "If I have fabricated it, still you have no power to support me against Allah. He knows best of what you say among yourselves concerning it (i.e. this Quran)! Sufficient is He for a witness between me and you! And He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful."

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ ۖ

Or say they: 'He (Muhammad SAW) has fabricated it.'

قُلْ إِنِ افْتَرَيْتُهُ

Say: 'If I have fabricated it,'

فَلَا تَمْلِكُونَ لِي مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا ۖ

still you have no power to support me against Allah.

هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ ۖ

He knows best of what you say among yourselves concerning it (i.e. this Quran)!

كَفَىٰ بِهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۖ

Sufficient is He for a witness between me and you!

وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

And He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

قُلْ مَا كُنتُ بِدْعًا مِّنَ الرُّسُلِ وَمَا أَدْرِي مَا يُفْعَلُ بِي وَلَا بِكُمْ ۖ إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ وَمَا أَنَا إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ٩

[46:9] Say (O Muhammad SAW):"I am not a new thing among the Messengers (of Allah) (i.e. I am not the first Messenger) nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am but a plain warner."

قُلْ مَا كُنتُ بِدْعًا مِّنَ الرُّسُلِ

Say (O Muhammad SAW): 'I am not a new thing among the Messengers (of Allah)'

وَمَا أَدْرِي مَا يُفْعَلُ بِي وَلَا بِكُمْ ۖ

nor do I know what will be done with me or with you.

إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ

I only follow that which is revealed to me,

وَمَا أَنَا إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

and I am but a plain warner.

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ وَكَفَرْتُم بِهِ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ مِّن بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَىٰ مِثْلِهِ فَآمَنَ وَاسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ ١٠

[46:10] Say: "Tell me! If this (Quran) is from Allah, and you deny it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel ('Abdullah bin Salam) testifies that this Quran is from Allah [like the Taurat (Torah)], so he believed (embraced Islam) while you are too proud (to believe)." Verily! Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers and wrong-doing).

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ

Say: 'Tell me!

إِن كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ

If this (Quran) is from Allah,

وَكَفَرْتُم بِهِ

and you deny it,

وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ مِّن بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

and a witness from among the Children of Israel

عَلَىٰ مِثْلِهِ

testifies that this Quran is from Allah [like the Taurat (Torah)],

فَآمَنَ

so he believed (embraced Islam)

وَاسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ ۖ

while you are too proud (to believe).

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Verily! Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers and wrong-doing).

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَوْ كَانَ خَيْرًا مَّا سَبَقُونَا إِلَيْهِ ۚ وَإِذْ لَمْ يَهْتَدُوا بِهِ فَسَيَقُولُونَ هَٰذَا إِفْكٌ قَدِيمٌ ١١

[46:11] And those who disbelieve (strong and wealthy) say of those who believe (weak and poor): "Had it (Islamic Monotheism to which Muhammad SAW is inviting mankind) been a good thing, they (weak and poor) would not have preceded us thereto!" And when they have not let themselves be guided by it (this Quran), they say: "This is an ancient lie!"

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And those who disbelieve

لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

say of those who believe

لَوْ كَانَ خَيْرًا

Had it (Islamic Monotheism to which Muhammad SAW is inviting mankind) been a good thing

مَّا سَبَقُونَا إِلَيْهِ ۚ

they (weak and poor) would not have preceded us thereto!

وَإِذْ لَمْ يَهْتَدُوا بِهِ

And when they have not let themselves be guided by it (this Quran)

فَسَيَقُولُونَ

they say:

هَٰذَا إِفْكٌ قَدِيمٌ

This is an ancient lie!

وَقَالَ

وَمِن قَبْلِهِ كِتَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً ۚ وَهَٰذَا كِتَابٌ مُّصَدِّقٌ لِّسَانًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّيُنذِرَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ ١٢

[46:12] And before this was the Scripture of Musa (Moses) as a guide and a mercy. And this is a confirming Book (the Quran) in the Arabic language, to warn those who do wrong, and as glad tidings to the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V. 2:112).

وَمِن قَبْلِهِ كِتَابُ مُوسَىٰ

And before this was the Scripture of Musa (Moses)

إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً ۚ

as a guide and a mercy.

وَهَٰذَا كِتَابٌ مُّصَدِّقٌ

And this is a confirming Book (the Quran)

لِّسَانًا عَرَبِيًّا

in the Arabic language,

لِّيُنذِرَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا

to warn those who do wrong,

وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ

and as glad tidings to the Muhsinun (good-doers).

وَمِن

[46:13] Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is (only) Allah," and thereafter Istaqamu (i.e. stood firm and straight on the Islamic Faith of Monotheism by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allah has forbidden and by performing all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained), on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا

Verily, those who say:

رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ

"Our Lord is (only) Allah,"

ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا

and thereafter Istaqamu (i.e. stood firm and straight)

فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ

on them shall be no fear,

وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

nor shall they grieve.

[46:14] Such shall be the dwellers of Paradise, abiding therein (forever), a reward for what they used to do.

جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ إِحْسَانًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا ۖ وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا ۚ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ١٥

[46:15] And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty (30) months, till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years, he says: "My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my off-spring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims (submitting to Your Will)."

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ إِحْسَانًا ۖ

And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents.

حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا ۖ

His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship,

وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا ۚ

and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty (30) months.

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً

till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years,

قَالَ رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ

he says: 'My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents,'

وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ

and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You,

وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ

and make my off-spring good.

إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims (submitting to Your Will).

[46:16] They are those from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds and overlook their evil deeds. (They shall be) among the dwellers of Paradise, a promise of truth, which they have been promised.

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ

They are those

نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنْهُمْ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا

from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds

وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَن سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ

and overlook their evil deeds.

فِي أَصْحَابِ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ

(They shall be) among the dwellers of Paradise,

وَعْدَ الصِّدْقِ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ

a promise of truth, which they have been promised.

[46:17] But he who says to his parents: "Fie upon you both! Do you hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up (again) when generations before me have passed away (without rising)?" While they (father and mother) invoke Allah for help (and rebuke their son): "Woe to you! Believe! Verily, the Promise of Allah is true." But he says: "This is nothing but the tales of the ancient."

وَالَّذِي قَالَ لِوَالِدَيْهِ

But he who says to his parents:

أُفٍّ لَّكُمَا

"Fie upon you both!"

أَتَعِدَانِنِي أَنْ أُخْرَجَ

Do you hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up (again)

وَقَدْ خَلَتِ الْقُرُونُ مِن قَبْلِي

"This is nothing but the tales of the ancient."

[46:18] They are those against whom the Word (of torment) is justified among the previous generations of jinns and mankind that have passed away. Verily! They are ever the losers.

حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ

against whom the Word (of torment) is justified

فِي أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم

among the previous generations

مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ ۖ

of jinns and mankind

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَاسِرِينَ

Verily! They are ever the losers.

And for all, there will be degrees according to that which they did

وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ

وَعْدَ الصِّدْقِ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ

a promise of truth, which they have been promised.

وَالَّذِي قَالَ لِوَالِدَيْهِ أُفٍّ لَّكُمَا أَتَعِدَانِنِي أَنْ أُخْرَجَ وَقَدْ خَلَتِ الْقُرُونُ مِن قَبْلِي وَهُمَا يَسْتَغِيثَانِ اللَّهَ وَيْلَكَ آمِنْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ فَيَقُولُ مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ١٧

[46:17] But he who says to his parents: "Fie upon you both! Do you hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up (again) when generations before me have passed away (without rising)?" While they (father and mother) invoke Allah for help (and rebuke their son): "Woe to you! Believe! Verily, the Promise of Allah is true." But he says: "This is nothing but the tales of the ancient."

وَالَّذِي قَالَ لِوَالِدَيْهِ

But he who says to his parents:

أُفٍّ لَّكُمَا

"Fie upon you both!"

أَتَعِدَانِنِي أَنْ أُخْرَجَ

Do you hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up (again)

وَقَدْ خَلَتِ الْقُرُونُ مِن قَبْلِي

when generations before me have passed away (without rising)?

وَهُمَا يَسْتَغِيثَانِ اللَّهَ

While they (father and mother) invoke Allah for help

وَيْلَكَ آمِنْ

(and rebuke their son): "Woe to you! Believe!

إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ

Verily, the Promise of Allah is true."

فَيَقُولُ

But he says:

مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

"This is nothing but the tales of the ancient."

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ فِي أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَاسِرِينَ ١٨

[46:18] They are those against whom the Word (of torment) is justified among the previous generations of jinns and mankind that have passed away. Verily! They are ever the losers.

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ

They are those

حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ

against whom the Word (of torment) is justified

فِي أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم

among the previous generations

مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ ۖ

of jinns and mankind

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَاسِرِينَ

Verily! They are ever the losers.

[46:19] And for all, there will be degrees according to that which they did, that He (Allah) may recompense them in full for their deeds. And they will not be wronged.

وَلِكُلٍّ دَرَجَاتٌ مِّمَّا عَمِلُوا ۖ

And for all, there will be degrees according to that which they did

وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ

that He (Allah) may recompense them in full for their deeds

وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

And they will not be wronged

وَلِكُلٍّ

وَيَوْمَ يُعْرَضُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا عَلَى النَّارِ أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَاتِكُمْ فِي حَيَاتِكُمُ الدُّنْيَا وَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِهَا فَالْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ عَذَابَ الْهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْسُقُونَ ٢٠

[46:20] On the Day when those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) will be exposed to the Fire (it will be said): "You received your good things in the life of the world, and you took your pleasure therein. Now this Day you shall be recompensed with a torment of humiliation, because you were arrogant in the land without a right, and because you used to rebel and disobey (Allah).

وَيَوْمَ يُعْرَضُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا عَلَى النَّارِ

On the Day when those who disbelieve will be exposed to the Fire

أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَاتِكُمْ فِي حَيَاتِكُمُ الدُّنْيَا

You received your good things in the life of the world

وَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِهَا

and you took your pleasure therein.

فَالْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ عَذَابَ الْهُونِ

Now this Day you shall be recompensed with a torment of humiliation,

بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ

because you were arrogant in the land without a right,

وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْسُقُونَ

and because you used to rebel and disobey (Allah).

وَيَوْمَ

۞ وَاذْكُرْ أَخَا عَادٍ إِذْ أَنذَرَ قَوْمَهُ بِالْأَحْقَافِ وَقَدْ خَلَتِ النُّذُرُ مِن بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ ٢١

[46:21] And remember (Hud) the brother of 'Ad, when he warned his people in Al-Ahqaf (the curved sand-hills in the southern part of Arabian Peninsula). And surely, there have passed away warners before him and after him (saying): "Worship none but Allah; truly, I fear for you the torment of a mighty Day."

۞ وَاذْكُرْ أَخَا عَادٍ

And remember (Hud) the brother of 'Ad

إِذْ أَنذَرَ قَوْمَهُ بِالْأَحْقَافِ

when he warned his people in Al-Ahqaf

وَقَدْ خَلَتِ النُّذُرُ مِن بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ

And surely, there have passed away warners before him and after him

أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ

saying: 'Worship none but Allah'

إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

truly, I fear for you the torment of a mighty Day

[46:22] They said: "Have you come to turn us away from our aliha (gods)? Then bring us that with which you threaten us, if you are one of the truthful!"

قَالُوا

They said:

أَجِئْتَنَا لِتَأْفِكَنَا عَنْ آلِهَتِنَا

Have you come to turn us away from our aliha (gods)?

فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا

Then bring us that with which you threaten us,

إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ

if you are one of the truthful!

[46:23] He said: "The knowledge (of the time of its coming) is with Allah only, and I convey to you that wherewith I have been sent, but I see that you are a people given to ignorance!"

قَالَ إِنَّمَا الْعِلْمُ عِندَ

The knowledge (of the time of its coming) is with Allah only,

اللَّهِ وَأُبَلِّغُكُم مَّا أُرْسِلْتُ

and I convey to you that wherewith I have been sent,

بِهِ وَلَٰكِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ قَوْمًا

but I see that you are a people given to ignorance!

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُّسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُّمْطِرُنَا ۚ بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُم بِهِ ۖ رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٢٤

[46:24] Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said: "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Nay, but it is that (torment) which you were asking to be hastened! a wind wherein is a painful torment!

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُّسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ

Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys,

قَالُوا هَٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُّمْطِرُنَا ۚ

they said: 'This is a cloud bringing us rain!'

بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُم بِهِ ۖ

Nay, but it is that (torment) which you were asking to be hastened!

رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

a wind wherein is a painful torment!

فَلَمَّا

[46:25] Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord! So they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings! Thus do We recompense the people who are Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, etc.)!

تُدَمِّرُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ بِأَمْرِ رَبِّهَا

Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord!

فَأَصْبَحُوا لَا يُرَىٰ إِلَّا مَسَاكِنُهُمْ ۚ

So they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings!

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْقَوْمَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ

Thus do We recompense the people who are Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, etc.)!

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ فِيمَا إِن مَّكَّنَّاكُمْ فِيهِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَمْعًا وَأَبْصَارًا وَأَفْئِدَةً فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُهُمْ وَلَا أَفْئِدَتُهُم مِّن شَيْءٍ إِذْ كَانُوا يَجْحَدُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ٢٦

[46:26] And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you (O Quraish)! And We had assigned them the (faculties of) hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts, but their hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and their hearts availed them nothing since they used to deny the Ayat (Allah's Prophets and their Prophethood, proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and they were completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ فِيمَا إِن مَّكَّنَّاكُمْ فِيهِ

And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you (O Quraish)!

وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَمْعًا وَأَبْصَارًا وَأَفْئِدَةً

إِذْ كَانُوا يَجْحَدُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ

وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا مَا حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ الْقُرَىٰ وَصَرَّفْنَا الْآيَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ٢٧

[46:27] And indeed We have destroyed towns (populations) round about you, and We have (repeatedly) shown (them) the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in various ways that they might return (to the truth and believe in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism).

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا مَا حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ الْقُرَىٰ

And indeed We have destroyed towns (populations) round about you,

وَصَرَّفْنَا الْآيَاتِ

and We have (repeatedly) shown (them) the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)

لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

that they might return (to the truth and believe in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism).

وَلَقَدْ

فَلَوْلَا نَصَرَهُمُ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ قُرْبَانًا آلِهَةً ۖ بَلْ ضَلُّوا عَنْهُمْ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ إِفْكُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ ٢٨

[46:28] Then why did those whom they had taken for aliha (gods) besides Allah, as a way of approach (to Allah) not help them? Nay, but they vanished completely from them (when there came the torment). And that was their lie, and their inventions which they had been inventing (before their destruction).

فَلَوْلَا نَصَرَهُمُ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ قُرْبَانًا آلِهَةً ۖ

Then why did those whom they had taken for aliha (gods) besides Allah, as a way of approach (to Allah) not help them?

بَلْ ضَلُّوا عَنْهُمْ ۚ

وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَا إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوا أَنصِتُوا ۖ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ وَلَّوْا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِم مُّنذِرِينَ ٢٩

[46:29] And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad SAW) Nafran (three to ten persons) of the jinns, (quietly) listening to the Quran, when they stood in the presence thereof, they said: "Listen in silence!" And when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners.

وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَا إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ

And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad SAW) Nafran (three to ten persons) of the jinns,

يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ

(quietly) listening to the Quran,

فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ

when they stood in the presence thereof,

قَالُوا أَنصِتُوا ۖ

they said: 'Listen in silence!'

فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ

And when it was finished,

وَلَّوْا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

they returned to their people, as warners.

قَالُوا يَا قَوْمَنَا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا كِتَابًا أُنزِلَ مِن بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْحَقِّ وَإِلَىٰ طَرِيقٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ٣٠

[46:30] They said: "O our people! Verily! We have heard a Book (this Quran) sent down after Musa (Moses), confirming what came before it, it guides to the truth and to a Straight Path (i.e. Islam).

قَالُوا يَا قَوْمَنَا إِنَّا

They said: 'O our people!'

سَمِعْنَا كِتَابًا أُنزِلَ مِن بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ مُصَدِّقًا

Verily! We have heard a Book sent down after Musa (Moses),

لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ يَهْدِي

confirming what came before it,

إِلَى الْحَقِّ وَإِلَىٰ طَرِيقٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

it guides to the truth and to a Straight Path (i.e. Islam).

قَالُوا

يَا قَوْمَنَا أَجِيبُوا دَاعِيَ اللَّهِ وَآمِنُوا بِهِ يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُجِرْكُم مِّنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٣١

[46:31] O our people! Respond (with obedience) to Allah's Caller (i.e. Allah's Messenger Muhammad SAW), and believe in him (i.e. believe in that which Muhammad SAW has brought from Allah and follow him). He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins, and will save you from a painful torment (i.e. Hell-fire).

يَا قَوْمَنَا أَجِيبُوا

O our people!

دَاعِيَ اللَّهِ وَآمِنُوا

Respond (with obedience) to Allah's Caller (i.e. Allah's Messenger Muhammad SAW),

بِهِ يَغْفِرْ

and believe in him (i.e. believe in that which Muhammad SAW has brought from Allah and follow him).

لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُجِرْكُم

He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins,

مِّنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

and will save you from a painful torment (i.e. Hell-fire).

وَمَن لَّا يُجِبْ دَاعِيَ اللَّهِ فَلَيْسَ بِمُعْجِزٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَيْسَ لَهُ مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءُ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ ٣٢

[46:32] And whosoever does not respond to Allah's Caller, he cannot escape on earth, and there will be no Auliya' (protectors) for him besides Allah (from Allah's Punishment). Those are in manifest error.

وَمَن لَّا يُجِبْ دَاعِيَ اللَّهِ

And whosoever does not respond to Allah's Caller,

فَلَيْسَ بِمُعْجِزٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ

he cannot escape on earth,

وَلَيْسَ لَهُ مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءُ ۚ

and there will be no Auliya' (protectors) for him besides Allah

أُولَٰئِكَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ

Those are in manifest error.

وَمَن

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَعْيَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ بَلَىٰ إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ٣٣

[46:33] Do they not see that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and was not wearied by their creation, is Able to give life to the dead? Yes, He surely is Able to do all things.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا

Do they not see

أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ

that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth

وَلَمْ يَعْيَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ

and was not wearied by their creation

بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ

is Able to give life to the dead?

بَلَىٰ إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Yes, He surely is Able to do all things.

وَيَوْمَ يُعْرَضُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا عَلَى النَّارِ أَلَيْسَ هَٰذَا بِالْحَقِّ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَا ۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ ٣٤

[46:34] And on the Day when those who disbelieve will be exposed to the Fire (it will be said to them): "Is this not the truth?" They will say: "Yes, By our Lord!" He will say: "Then taste the torment, because you used to disbelieve!"

وَيَوْمَ يُعْرَضُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا عَلَى النَّارِ

And on the Day when those who disbelieve will be exposed to the Fire

أَلَيْسَ هَٰذَا بِالْحَقِّ ۖ

(it will be said to them): 'Is this not the truth?'

قَالُوا بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَا ۚ

They will say: 'Yes, By our Lord!'

قَالَ فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

He will say: 'Then taste the torment, because you used to disbelieve!'

وَيَوْمَ

فَاصْبِرْ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُولُو الْعَزْمِ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ وَلَا تَسْتَعْجِل لَّهُمْ ۚ كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا سَاعَةً مِّن نَّهَارٍ ۚ بَلَاغٌ ۚ فَهَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ ٣٥

[46:35] Therefore be patient (O Muhammad SAW) as did the Messengers of strong will and be in no haste about them (disbelievers). On the Day when they will see that (torment) with which they are promised (i.e. threatened, it will be) as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day. (O mankind! This Quran is sufficient as) a clear Message (or proclamation to save yourself from destruction). But shall any be destroyed except the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

فَاصْبِرْ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُولُو الْعَزْمِ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ

Therefore be patient (O Muhammad SAW) as did the Messengers of strong will

وَلَا تَسْتَعْجِل لَّهُمْ ۚ

and be in no haste about them (disbelievers).

كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ

On the Day when they will see that (torment) with which they are promised

لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا سَاعَةً مِّن نَّهَارٍ ۚ

(i.e. threatened, it will be) as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day.

بَلَاغٌ ۚ

(O mankind! This Quran is sufficient as) a clear Message (or proclamation to save yourself from destruction).

فَهَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ

But shall any be destroyed except the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

فَاصْبِرْ
